A trip to Gloucester today to see the Severn Bore from Upper Rea (SO807167), a tide-induced wave which races up the River Severn occasionally. This was a 'four star' wave, the only one this year. Look forward to seeing the predictions for 2026 when they come out, hoping for one of the ultra-rare 'five star'… Continue reading ► THE SEVERN BORE (31st March, 2025).

► A MARATHON ON MY 60TH BIRTHDAY – DID IT, WITH QUALIFICATIONS.
Success. My goal was sub-six hours, and managed it in 5:39:54 according to Strava. Ran three circuits of Draycote, 14.3 miles (23 kilometres), but then reduced to a mixture of walking and running, managing to run most of the final two miles. I estimate I ran about 65-70% of the total distance. My speed profile… Continue reading ► A MARATHON ON MY 60TH BIRTHDAY – DID IT, WITH QUALIFICATIONS.
► AFTER BERENICE ABBOTT IN LEICESTER.
Berenice Abbott (1898-1991) was a American photographer whose urban landscapes appeal to my eye - they emphasise architecture in a geometric, abstract or even vorticist way. I was pleased to find there was a link, if very tenuous, with Annie L. Swynnerton, the artist I have made a special study of, Berenice being a friend… Continue reading ► AFTER BERENICE ABBOTT IN LEICESTER.
► GLOW-WORMS ON THE WEST HIGHLAND WAY (18-20 June 2024).
Managed 59 miles along the West Highland Way, including a night walk, a night in a bothy, a wild(ish) camp and a pitch in holiday park with a very welcome shower. I don't think I'll ever go to Scotland again in the summer. I thought I knew how to cope with midges, but I got… Continue reading ► GLOW-WORMS ON THE WEST HIGHLAND WAY (18-20 June 2024).
► TO WALK ACROSS WALES – June 2023.
Following my trip across the South-west Peninsula Isthmus in 2016, I had the thought, once COVID restrictions were eased, of walking across Wales - from the point where the English border lies at it's most westwards to the point where the coastline curves most inwards - in a single day. There are a couple of… Continue reading ► TO WALK ACROSS WALES – June 2023.
► FKT no. 2
I now have two places at fastestknowntime.com, one for the Harry Green Way and another for the Knightley Way 'out & back' route. Neither are fast times, having just walked the routes. The Knightley Way has been run in the one direction in well under two hours, meaning the double could be done by a… Continue reading ► FKT no. 2
► FKT!
A few days ago I walked around the Harry Green Way. I then discovered it is listed on the Fastest Know Time web site, so I uploaded my time and supporting GPX and Strava data. It was accepted, being the first submitted time for the route, so in spite of my very pedestrian pace, I… Continue reading ► FKT!
